Unilever is in the advanced testing phase of a revolutionary compostable back-sheet material supplied by HENGYI SHENGXIN for its feminine care portfolio, including brands like Suave. The material, branded EcoShield™, is a biodegradable composite film based on PLA (polylactic acid) and seaweed extracts.
EcoShield™ delivers the essential leak-proof and conforming properties of traditional plastic back-sheets but is designed to fully decompose into water and CO₂ within one year under specific home-composting conditions, leaving no microplastic residue. Following successful performance and consumer acceptance trials, Unilever plans to launch sanitary pads featuring this back-sheet in select European markets by 2025, potentially marking the first large-scale commercial use of a “plastic-free” back-sheet by a mainstream brand.
The CTO of HENGYI SHENGXIN commented, “EcoShield™ is the result of five years of R&D focused on solving the end-of-life challenge for hygiene products without compromising performance. We are thrilled to support Unilever’s ambitious plastic reduction goals.”
