The focus on raw materials is extending beyond absorbency to direct skin contact points, driven by rising consumer awareness of skin health. Innovations in adhesives and top sheets are at the forefront. Traditional hot-melt adhesives used to bind layers and secure wings are being reformulated to be hypoallergenic and residue-free. Companies like H.B. Fuller are introducing new “gentle-stick” formulas with higher purity base polymers to minimize the risk of irritation for sensitive skin. For the top sheet—the layer in direct contact with the body—the trend is moving away from standard polypropylene non-wovens. Now, seamless, cotton-like non-wovens made from rayon or specialty viscose are becoming standard in premium segments. Furthermore, technologies like “lotion application” (infusing the top sheet with moisturizers like aloe or chamomile) and “aqua-absorbent patterns” (3D embossing that creates a drier surface) are being integrated. These developments are not merely cosmetic; they address common issues like chafing, itchiness, and discomfort, reflecting an industry-wide shift towards a holistic, wellness-oriented approach to feminine care.
